The university presented the third volume of Mykola Kugutyak’s monograph “The Goshiv Yasna Gora Monastery of the Virgin Mary on Yasna Gora in the Carpathians”

Today, the presentation of the third volume of the monograph “Hoshyv Yasna Gora Monastery of the Virgin Mary on Yasna Gora in the Carpathians” took place at the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, the author of which is the head of the Research Institute of History, Ethnology and Archaeology of the Carpathians, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine Mykola Vasylovich Kugutyak.

The first volume was presented in early September 2018. The unique book was titled “Hošiv Monastery in Written Historical Sources of the 16th – 20th Centuries”, which begins the three-volume publication “Hošiv Monastery of the Mother of God on Yasna Gora in the Carpathians.”

The second volume was published in 2021 and was called “Yasnohirsk Monastery in Documentary Sources of the Mid-20th – Early 21st Centuries.”

The event was moderated by Ihor Hurak, Dean of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations.

The Acting Rector of the Carpathian National University of Internal Affairs, Professor Ihor Tsependa, addressed the participants of the presentation with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the spiritual and scientific significance of this publication: “This project is aimed at returning to the spiritual roots of the Ukrainian people and the history of our monasteries. Carpathian National University is one of the first in Ukraine to return to this topic in the scientific sphere. Goshiv Monastery is one of the oldest spiritual centers of our region, which was not only a religious center, but also a symbol of the Ukrainian struggle. Even during the totalitarian regime, the Soviet authorities did not dare to close it for a long time, fearing that Ukrainian believers would again raise a wave of resistance. Returning to these spiritual sources is extremely important – it testifies to our ancient Christian tradition, our spiritual roots. In this way, we set an example for other universities, because similar monasteries exist in many regions of Ukraine and have enormous potential for studying the history and establishing the greatness of Ukrainian Christianity.”

Archbishop and Metropolitan of Ivano-Frankivsk, His Holiness Volodymyr Viytyshyn, noted the importance of preserving the spiritual heritage of the Goshiv Monastery, which for centuries has united Ukrainians in faith, prayer, and love for God and the Fatherland. He added that this preserves the values of Ukrainians, because scientific understanding of the history of shrines contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of faith in the history of the Ukrainian people.

The monograph “Hoshyvska Yasna Gora Monastery – a Ukrainian pilgrimage-vacation and cultural-historical phenomenon” offered to readers completes the three-volume publication “Hoshyvska Monastery of the Mother of God on Yasna Gora in the Carpathians.”

“The book, based on a wide domestic and foreign source base, highlights the peculiarities of the emergence and development of the Basilian Yasnohirsk Monastery, the circumstances of its liquidation and revival, as well as the role of the monastery in the spiritual progress of Ukraine and the European Mari movement. An important component of the publication is the publication of documents on the history of the monastery,” noted the author of the monograph, Mykola Kugutyak.

The scientific publication is intended for historians, religious scholars, ethnologists, culturalists — everyone who is interested in the spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people and the history of Christianity in the Carpathian region. It once again proves that the spiritual heritage of Galicia remains an inexhaustible source of historical memory and inspiration.

The publication not only preserves the traditions of the past, but also opens up new opportunities for understanding the role of Ukrainian monasteries in the formation of national identity and spiritual progress of Ukraine.

The author expressed his sincere gratitude for the assistance in preparing the publication to: Archbishop and Metropolitan of Ivano-Frankivsk of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Kyr Volodymyr Vyityshyn, Chairman of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council, Oleksandr Sych, Chairman of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Military Administration, Svitlana Onyshchuk, Acting Rector of the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, Professor Ihor Tsependa, Abbot of the Hoshiv Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Lord of the Basilian Fathers, Fr.
