Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University has become a member of the Baltic University Programme (BUP), one of the largest and most prestigious university networks in Europe, which unites over 110 universities from 10 countries in the Baltic Sea region. The programme is coordinated by Uppsala University (Sweden), one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, founded in 1477. Participation in BUP opens up new opportunities for the university for international cooperation, academic mobility and the implementation of joint research initiatives.
The Baltic University Programme was launched in 1991 as an international academic initiative designed to unite universities in the region around a common goal – the development of education, science and society on the basis of sustainable development, democracy and a responsible attitude towards the environment. It is symbolic that at the very beginning of its activities, BUP became one of the pioneers of distance international education: participating universities held joint lectures and scientific discussions using satellite television, and later switched to modern digital platforms for international interaction.
Today, the Baltic University Programme is a powerful platform for collaboration between researchers, teachers, students and university leaders. Every year, the network organizes international conferences, summer schools, PhD trainings, young researchers’ forums, teacher training programs, student conferences, interdisciplinary seminars and numerous research projects. Network members gain access to a wide range of academic resources, international expert communities and partnership initiatives.
The BUP is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach. The network’s activities cover ten thematic areas, including: climate change, circular economy, sustainable development of cities and communities, energy systems, food security, water resources, sustainable tourism, mobility, education for sustainable development and democratic governance. It is this interdisciplinarity that allows us to unite representatives of natural, technical, social, economic and human sciences to jointly find solutions to current global challenges.
It is important that the Baltic University Programme is the flagship initiative of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region in the field of education. This confirms the high international authority of the programme and its significant role in the formation of a common European educational and scientific space.
For the Carpathian National University, membership in the Baltic University Programme means new opportunities for the development of international research consortia, participation in grant programs, expansion of academic mobility of students and teachers, launching joint educational courses, as well as more active integration into leading European university networks.
